I made two quick stops along the Potomac in Fairfax County this morning. The
first was at Riverside Park (just north of Mt. Vernon).
The highlight were 2 Red Foxes slowly wandering the frozen shoreline. I was
able to watch them in the scope for at least 10 mintues.
The birds were about what you'd expect with no real "wow" sightings.
Malard 100
Canada Goose 200
Bufflehead 2
Hooded Merg 7
Black Duck 1
Kingfisher 1
Bald Eagle 2 adults
Driving up the Parkway towards Dyke Marsh, I passed a couple of groups of 100
or so Canada Geese and a few smaller groups of Malards, but nothing else of
note on the water. I did see 2 Pileateds near the Collingwood parking area.
Up at Dyke Marsh, the tide was VERY low and all the bird were pretty far off.
The highlight was 6 immature Bald Eagles all in a row. Four of them were
very close together on one log and the other two were on another log/stick
next to the four down on the mud flats.
Other birds included:
Great Blue 33 (a conservative number)
Pied Billed Grebe 10
Gadwall 8
Malard hundreds
Canada Goose hundreds
Red Tailed Hawk 1
There were lots more ducks way out there, but the light wasn't that great and
I had to get back home, so I'll just wait for the totals from Kurt!!!
