VA Birders,
Seven local police departments are eyeing a property along Possum Point
Road in Dumfries for a regional shooting range. The property is owned
by Dominion Virginia Power and the company is willing to sell or lease
it for this use, as reported by Channel 9's evening news yesterday.
Local birders know Possum Point and Cockpit Point Roads between
Quantico Creek and the Potomac River as a prime area to see migrants in
the spring. Many species stay to breed, as well. A Bald Eagle nest is
present there and has been protected by the electric company. The
Prince William Co. government will have to give their approval and
public hearings will be held. Input from the public may influence the
decision. Birders have an interest in this issue and are advised to
follow this news story.
