Virginia Birders,
I just got an e-mail that looks like it came from the VA-Birds list - but
in fact it did not. It also looks to have a virus attached in the form of
a file named "trip5.jpg.scr". The e-mail itself is a fragment of one
posted to VA-Birds on July 27, 2003 and can be found in the archives at:

The e-mail looks like:

[va-bird] Addition to recent Dyke Marsh Report
VA BIRDers,
Following up on Stephen's wonderful report, let me note a few additions
that
Sherman Suter and I observed late today and include some notes I made
earlier
this week......
Be on the lookout for any attached files that end in .scr .exe .bat .pif
.com or others. A hacker can make an e-mail appear as it came from
anyone - so don't think that if you receive an e-mail from someone you know
that it is virus-free or that it even came from that person in the first
place. The virus writers are using better tactics to get us to click on
these files now - making their e-mails appear as if they come from popular
web forums such as VA-Birds and others. Also they want you to think that
the file is a picture by inserting a ".jpg" somewhere in the file name.
One thing that I do to combat this is to create a rule in my Outlook
program that automatically sends all VA-Birds mail to a folder called
"Birding" on my computer. When I noticed the message from "VA-Birds" in my
Inbox instead of my Birding folder, I realized it had not come from the
list at all. You can create as many rules as you want with Outlook -
having e-mail from your friends routed to a particular folder. This makes
getting rid of the tons of spam every day a little easier.
Not really birding related but certainly related to this list itself.
Have a great Holiday Season - lets find some great birds on the upcoming
CBCs.
