[va-bird] Possible Whooping Crane Sighting - Buchanan County

On Sunday evening I was talking with a non-birding friend on the phone. He
lives on Home Creek in the north-central part of Buchanan County. He mentioned
that early that morning he had been sitting on his sofa in his sun room, which
has large windows, when a large, white bird with white wing tips had flown past
at about house top level. He wanted to know if I might know which species it
was. I told him that he had probably seen a Snow Goose. He said, "no, it didn't
look like a goose. It looked like one of those big herons we often see in the
river, but was white with black wing tips."
I'm convinced this guy doesn't know anything about Whooping Cranes, and that he
isn't just "pulling my chain". At any rate the bird has not been found since.
If it were a Whooping Crane, it may have spent the night nearby, and was just
taking off to continue its migration. The area is mostly wooded with no large,
pastures or marshy areas, so It is anyone's guess why it would have dropped
down in that spot.
I suppose this will be one of those bird mysteries that leaves us wondering.

Good Birding,
