Thursday afternoon about 3:30,  5 or 6 birders standing on the bridge at
Monticello Park noticed a basically brown-striped grosbeak come down to the
water to bath. Someone called the bird as a female [red-breasted] grosbeak
in the water.  Everyone sort of initially agreed. Then I noticed that the
front of the bird was an unfamiliar yellow-orange color. I pointed this out
to the other observers and we all looked at the bird more carefully.  It did
look like a familiar brown-striped, female, rose- breasted grosbeak, but it
had this yellow-orange on the front of the breast and throat.   The color
was not a general sort of wash. It was a triangle shaped yellow -orange
patch,  about the same shape, size, and placement on the bird as the red is
on an adult, male, rose-breasted.   There was no observable red or pink on
the breast of this strange bird.  In our later discussions, one of the
observers, an experienced birder, was sure that the upper mandible was black
or dark.
The bird was only in the water for a couple of minutes, and then it flew
off.   It was not seen again. It did not chip, or sing ,or call.   I said I
thought it was some sort of hybrid.  After some later discussion among the
observers, and using four different bird guides,  we decided it was most
likely some sort of Rose-breasted -by- Black-headed grosbeak hybrid.  Sibley
notes that such hybrids are not uncommon, though only occasionally seen in
the east.
Given the weather this evening it seems very likely that the bird will
fly out tonight.  It is not likely to be there again tomorrow,  but we would
like to make a better determination as to what it might have been.  Has
anyone ever seen such a bird as described?  Does anyone know how common such
a hybrid might be in Virginia in migration? Other specific and concrete
information would also be useful.  We plan to discuss it again tomorrow and
I will post any further ideas we have.   It was certainly the most unusual
(and in that sense) interesting bird I have ever seen at Monticello Park in
about 17-years of birding there.
