Today I saw a single bird soaring and circling in a thermal, but it was not
a raptor. This bird was alone (i.e. not in a flock) and not flapping much
at all. I could see its light colored, long, straight bill. At first I
guessed DC Cormorant because I'd (mis?)identified DCCOs at Lake Brittle
recently. The birds on the lake only show a long black neck and head with
the same light yellow straight bill as the soaring bird. The flight pattern
and submerged body suggest Anhinga, but I'm skeptical of my identification
because their range is much more southerly than this.
Last week there were five of these birds on the lake, today at 11:30 AM I
only saw one on the water while I stood next to the concession stand.
