When travelling down US 17 South of Fredericksburg I like to stop where
the road crosses Portobago Creek, the border between Caroline and Essex
Counties. There is a good-sized marsh with a mix of shrubs, dead trees,
marsh grasses and water plants and I often find interesting birds here.
Better views are available to the West from the southbound lanes, but there
are marshy areas worth examining from the northbound lanes, too.
On Labor Day I saw a half-dozen Blue Grosbeaks and a short glimpse of
what
appeared to be a Lincoln's Sparrow.
In the past I have seen Red-headed Woodpeckers and American Bitterns in
this marsh, too.
