On Friday morning I took my non-birder brother up Pohick Creek in a canoe. I
seemed to have missed the migrant bonanza that others had that day, but we
just doing some casual birding of the local breeders.
We saw lots of what you'd expect paddling up a creek and got some fantastic
views of Prothonatary Warblers, including almost seeing them mate. (What I'm
assuming was the female was posed on a log with her tail in the air and
fluttering her wing, but the male who was in the area wouldn't come down to
her. Maybe he didn't like being watched?!?!)
One highlight was a singing Prairie warbler. We had him way up in the creek
in a field that you pass when you drive along Old Colchester Rd to Mason
Neck. I've never had Prairies here, but also have never done this part of
the creek/field in the Spring.
