Yesterday, my wife, a friend and I hiked much of the way up to Signal
Knob in the Masanuttens. Very few birds to report but we did have at
least one singing pine warbler in small group of yellow pines about half
way up the trail. Other highlights included blooming sedges and trailing
arbutus, a noisy pileated, small groups of Carolina chickadees and
golden-crowned kinglets and the disturbing view of a very large dead
black bear some 40 feet of the ground in a twisted chestnut oak tree. My
guess is that poachers had treed the bear, shot it and abandoned it when
it got hung in the branches.
