I conducted my opening survey of the 2002 season at Huntley Meadows Park,
Fairfax County, today (30 March). Three Pine Warblers were present in the
pines surrounding the maintenance shed in the backside of the park. Three
Yellow-rumps were also seen. However, two Black Vultures, not normally
observed during my surveys, were soaring about 20 feet (if that low altitude
can be defined as soaring) above the first meadow. Juncos were singing up a
storm- it's fun comparing their songs to that of the Pine Warblers. (Simple
minds- simple pleasures). Seven Tree Swallows were observed over the central
marsh. Other than that, species diversity was pretty low- I only tallied 35
species. Oh well, even a marginal day birding is better than a good day at
work.
