VA Birders:
Paula Sullivan reported a couple of Pine Warblers in Alexandria
earlier today. Interestingly, I came upon a male Pine Warbler in
with a flock of chickadees and titmice at Scotts Run Nature Preserve,
Fairfax County, this morning, while I was scouting for an ANS trip
I'll be leading later in April. There are no pine trees anywhere
near where I saw the bird, which was just above where Scotts Run
enters the Potomac, and undoubtedly this was a migrating bird. A
pair of Common Mergansers was just upstream from the outflow.
Another early migrant is the Louisiana Waterthrush, and I will bet
that there will be one singing along Scotts Run within the next 10
days. The habitat looks perfect for it. But there wasn't one there today.
