Howdy VAbirders!
The first surprise this morning was a warbler bouncing through the trees
and coming right at me as I watched out our livingroom window. It was too
bright to be a Yellow-rumped, the only species of warbler I've seen in our
garden so early in the season.
The second surprise was that it was a Pine Warbler, a new yardbird here!
The third surprise was that it flew down and sat on top of the shepherd's
hook holding some of our feeders. Hmmmmm...perhaps it will eat some suet
like Orange-crowned warblers sometimes do???
The fourth surprise was that it appeared to be eating some sunflower
chips. What?????? Maybe it was simply curious? So I watched closely and
actually saw it munching the seed. Egads!!!
The fifth surprise was that it has been back at least four more times today
to eat more sunflower seed and is munching more seed as I type this note!
Well, whaddya know?!!!
BTW, over the last several days Flickers have been migrating through our
garden and woods, calling and calling. There were 4 on the ground in our
garden this morning, probing the anthills and pounding the fallen branches
for snacks. Fun stuff!
