VA Birders and Others,
In my post about Pine Siskins, as I said in my original post, I was
referring to a late date for Buchanan County. I was not referring to
Northeast TN, nor to any other area in Southwest VA. To my knowledge the
only records kept for a period of extended time for Buchanan County have
been kept by birders of Buchanan County, dating back to the 1970's. Many of
these birders are now members of the Buchanan County Bird Club.

Pine Siskin flocks of 200 + have been "common" at feeders in Southwest
Virginia as late as the third week in May. They are expected throughout
the
region until the end of April. I should think a record becomes noteworthy
for lateness when siskins are present after at least the first week of
May.
At elevations above 2,000 feet, in Northeast Tennessee, we've had up to
six
birds stay around a feeder into June and then numbers slowly declined
until
the last departed the first week of October. We've actually had siskins
bring their young (2 adults with 3 young) in to a feeder at 2,800 feet,
27-30 June 2001. Summer birds at mid-elevations in the Blue Ridge were
noted as erratic by Mark Simpson (1992). And, of course, they nest in our
higher elevations of 5,000 feet and up -- probably fairly common at 4,000
feet too, if we knew the truth.
Let's go birding.......

VA Birders and Others,on Compton Mt. Those were the first ones I had seen here since March 3. I
Two Pine Siskins were feeding today on the thistle (nyger) seed sock here
thought March 31 was a bit late for them, but upon checking our club data
base I found that they have been found here in Buchanan County as late as
April 19. That late date was in 1982 in the Breaks area at the home of
David
Raines.
