Hello again Folks,
For those of you who may recall "our" Pileated duo Mrs. P and Klutzy, I
thought you might like an update. The last time we saw them was during
Hurricane Isabel. Before the storm there were 2 huge old Sycamore trees
behind us in the woods, both about the same size and both with Pileated
holes in them. Isabel took down one of them, and since our duo disappeared
sometime during the storm, I have to wonder if they had been currently
using it as a nesting/roosting tree.
Ever since the storm I've been worried about them, and thought perhaps they
had perished. Then about 2 weeks ago, Klutzy returned to our Pileated suet
feeder. My boy was back! Since then I've kept watch for Mrs. P, and with
each passing day a smidge more of my optimism faded away. This morning I
said to my daughter that I wondered if Mrs. P had died due to old age, or
perhaps was killed by the Cooper's Hawk that has been here lately. I guess
my vibes went out to her, for about an hour ago Mrs. P came to our suet
feeder. So now my girl is back too! It is a joy and a privilege to have
them for neighbors, you betcha!
