VA Birders,
Pat Blyer and I were birding at Fort C.F. Smith Park in Arlington
yesterday (Thursday) morning, May 26, when a large raptor suddenly flew over
our
heads. (Unfortunately, it came from behind us, so we only saw it briefly, and
mostly from the rear, as it quickly disappeared behind some trees.) The bird
looked pale underneath and gray or bluish-gray on the back. It had long,
pointed
wings and was flying with a steady, rowing wingbeat. We realized quickly
that it was a falcon, and since it was much too large for a Kestrel or Merlin,
we
concluded that it could only be a PEREGRINE FALCON. I think this is my first
record of a Peregrine for the park, but I have seen one previously at
National Airport, which is nearby.
Good birding,
Val Kitchens
