Several years ago I saw a Purple Finch with plumage like that during
the Lexington CBC. The areas that would normally have been red were
very white and the brown areas were the normal shade of brown. When I
first spotted it, it was behind the trunk of a tree and all I could
see was the white head. Needless to say, I didn't have an easy time
figuring out what it was until I managed to see the rest of it. I've
seen House Finches that were partially lacking in red, but never one
that was totally lacking it.
