VA BIRDers,
Top bird during CVWO's Rarities Round-up was a Pacific Loon, reported by Harry
Armistead and Bill Williams near 11AM today between the parking lot and the
concrete ships (north side) at Kiptopeke SP. Despite valiant mid-afternoon
efforts after the CVWO Annual Meeting, several of us were unable to refind this
bird at KSP or at Sunset Beach. Larry Meade was going to try again tomorrow
morning.
Not much else rare-wise was found, some of the also interesting or uncommon
were dozens of Common Loons on the bayside, several dozen Northern Gannets off
the bayside beaches (many flying over the pound stakes; Larry Brindza reported
many hundreds off the CBBT island during his morning crossing; a few hundred
were present near sunset), 50 White Ibis at Ramp Rd and ca. 80 at Magatha Rd
early morning (fide Harry and Bill) - likely two different groups, Sora
crossing Ramp Rd near the gate at sunrise (a very high morning tide), Sedge
Wren and Marsh Wren at Magotha Rd (again, thanks to Harry and Bill for these)
the former not being photogenic at all!), and an Orange-crowned calling with a
sparrow flock (and a House Wren) near the entrance booth of KSP.
Near sunset, Rich Rieger and I visited the CBBT islands and noted a couple of
Great Cormorants, White-winged Scoters and Long-tailed Ducks plus 8 huddled
Purple Sandpipers escaping the pounding surf. Both Surf and Black Scoter were
noted. Plus, on Island #2, 5 American Oystercatchers huddled on the rocks. On
the drive to VA Beach, we observed at least 5000 Laughing Gulls coming into
roost under or near the bridge.
