For the 4th year in a row, a PACIFIC LOON has been found at Kerr Reservoir
in Mecklenburg County. As in 3 of the past 4 years, the bird was located
at the Palmer Point Day Use Area. It was fairly distant and to the left of
the point and was hard to keep track of as it fed actively. Thankfully,
the wind was very light which gave me an opportunity to get diagnostic
looks. Hopefully, it will stick around all winter again. Also present at
Palmer Point was an adult RED-THROATED LOON, also at least 4 years running.
COMMON LOONS, DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANTS and many BONAPARTE'S GULLS were
chasing bait. Two RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS were calling frequently in nearby
trees. Elsewhere, the marsh on route 1 had WOOD DUCK, RING-NECKED DUCK,
HOODED MERGANSER and PIED-BILLED GREBE. BUFFLEHEAD were seen in a few
locations. The main lake had a large group of HORNED GREBES. Highlights
at Dick Cross WMA included 2 imm. WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS and a juv.
NORTHERN HARRIER that floated directly over my head, not more than 10 feet
above me. Wow! Good birding.
