Today (March 12) Mark Johnson and I birded Kerr Resv. In Mecklienburg Co.
Highlights were seeing the Pacific Loon at Palmer's Point between 9:00 and
10:15 am. in the very loose company of 6 Common Loons and 1 Red-throated Loon.
We had a Osprey above the dam and imm. Bald Eagle below the dam. Also below the
dam, we observed an imm. Great Cormorant resting on the exposed rocks with
about 25 Double-crested Cormorant. The Great Cormorant stood out like a
sore thumb with it's "gleaming white belly", dark throat and upper breast,
streaked flanks, larger size, and heavier bill. I believe this is a first
Piedmont VA record for this species. Other birds of note included a
Red-headed Woodpecker at North Bend, a first winter Great Black-backed Gull
above the dam,and several Horned Grebe sporting golden-orange "horns".
Good Birding,
