I was traveling down Rt. 1 in Alexandria last night at about 10:00 pm and saw
something fly above the car that was big (not a bat) and lightish
(reflections of the street lights). It flew across Rt. 1 and landed on top
of one of the lights in the Mt. Veron Multiplex Movie Theater. I pulled the
car around into the lot and near the light where he landed and sure enough,
there was an owl on top of the light! It didn't seem to mind the car and
foot traffic below.
I couldn't see much of the bird except for the underside of the tail and some
of the wings, and I was also looking up into the light without binoculars, so
I couldn't make a positive ID. It was big like a Barred or Great Horned,
and the tail was barred on the underside which Sibley shows both those owls
having.
Whatever it was, it was pretty cool to see a wild beast in the middle of
stripmall hell.
