All,
Got some great looks at the Pacific Loon that is still hanging out
in Seneca Creek State Park in Montgomery county MD. I was on the
lake shore path at 10: 30 this morning that encircles Clopper Lake. I was
looking at a Common Loon when the Pacific came up from the opposite end
of the lake. It would dive and seemed to stay under forever only to come up
about
30yds away from where it went under. Having the two so close together made
identification and comparisons very easy. I had the spotting scope with me and
was
observing from 75yds. The Pacific had noticeably darker plumage was smaller in
size
and had a sleeker, more pointed bill than the Common. A thin neck band was
detected
that didn't completely go around the neck. Really a neat bird (any lifer is a
neat bird right!!)
If your interested take Germantown Rd (rt 118) west off of I-270 to Clopper Rd
(rt 117). Make a left and 1.5 miles on the right is the state park. Believe me,
it
was worth the trip.
