Subject: Ontario birder needs advice on Virginia Birds
Hello Ron,
I live outside of Toronto, Ontario and I am planning on doing some birding
along the Maryland/Virginia border - the first week of July. I purchased the
ABA " Birder's guide to Virginia dated 1997. This book does not have all the
info. I need. I am still in search of local knowledge and specifics. I need
advice on the (MOST GUARANTEED- Accessible Locations) for the following birds:
My overall goal is to see these target birds without visiting scattered
locations. From what I have read, it seems as though visiting the Chincoteague
NWR is my absolute best bet for birds 1-7. 1-5 are my top priority, I want to
have good looks at these. I do not want to come from Ontario and miss these.
With your help, would I be almost guaranteed to find 1-5 at Chincoteague ?
1. Wilson's Plover ( Please tell me there are some good accessible viewing
locations)
2. Royal Tern
3. Sandwich Tern
4. Brown-headed nuthatch (would prefer an active feeder that guarantee's
sightings (e.g. Visitor's centers)
5. Salt-marsh Sharp-tailed Sparrow
6. White Ibis (I realize this is rare, any advice ? should I just forget this
one?)
7. Yellow-crowned night heron ( best roosting location for easy viewing ?)
8. Red- cockaded woodpecker (is there a guaranteed site? I have been reading
about private property only)
9. Black vulture ( best roosting location for easy viewing ?)
10. Swainson's Warbler
11. Blue Grosbeak
12. Barn owl
