I spent the weekend with my business in No. Va. this weekend. Saw the
loggerhead shrike by the Rapidan bridge by Orange again Sat morn. Early
Sunday I kept telling myself its only 20 mi out of the way, its only 20 miles
out of the way. Eventually I was there behind Comfort Suites at 8:15 this
morning. Red necked grebe, redhead, hooded merganser, mallard, scaup all in
one 8X40 view was worth it. One of the 4 grebes did look different but I feel
it was just plumage change going on. I stopped across the street by Logans
Steak House and got 15 hooded mergansers and 2 tree swallows. There were 4
pintail in the water right by the new 234 overpass on hwy 28. Saw 6 American
Kestrel between Manassas and Catlett. Outside for 3 hrs by Catlett- there was
a constant trickle of gulls moving north high up the whole time.Redwing
blackbirds singing galore. There are two Cardinals in that neighborhood that
have to have sore throats right now-they were putting the most vocal and
spectacular territorial display I've seen from Cardinals in 35 yrs of
birdwatching. Back at Zion Crossroads at 10:15 tonight, the peepers are still
singing now in the wetlands in the back property.
