The Williamsburg Bird Club and New Quarter Park are co-sponsoring a one-day
"Nature Camp" Saturday, October 14 at New Quarter Park in York County near
Williamsburg. This park borders the Colonial Parkway, the York River, and
Queen's Creek.
This camp was a great success when we ran it in June and participants
requested another session in the fall. We still have spaces open.
Participants will explore the park to learn about the flora, fauna, and
biogeography of one of the most diverse, undeveloped environments in our
area, led by the best instructors and naturalists this community has to
offer - Bill Williams, ornithologist from W&M's Center for Conservation
Biology, Dr. Jerre Johnson, Professor of Geology Emeritus at William and
Mary, and Hugh Beard, naturalist and skilled science educator of adults,
children, and teachers.
The day's schedule:
* 7:30 - 8:00 a.m. - Introductions and Short History of New Quarter
Park.
* 8:00 - 12:00 a.m. - "Find out what's out there" - Explore the park
with the focused guidance of naturalists Bill Williams and Hugh Beard. Get
your hands dirty, learn how science works, discover tricks for identifying
flora and fauna, and PRACTICE what you're learning.
* 12:00 noon - 1:00 p.m. - Lunch brought in from the Carrot Tree
Bakery!! We'll have bottled water and light snacks available throughout the
day.
* 1:00 - 5:00 p.m. - "Walk, talk, and touch" tour of the biogeography
and geology of the park led by Dr. Jerre Johnson. Each person will receive a
Virginia state fossil to take home.
Fee is $45 per person to cover lunch, supplies, and materials. Any proceeds
benefit the Williamsburg Bird Club's scholarships and educational programs.
Time: 7:30 am - 5:00 pm. Saturday, October 14, 2006. Open to folks 16 and
older. Younger teenagers will be accepted if accompanied by a parent or an
adult.
