On Friday morning, August 30, there was an Olive-sided Flycatcher perched on
a snag viewed from the southernmost boardwalk (ie., nearest the railroad
bridge) at Leesylvania State Park. The bird did not display white tufts, but
its large bill, well-defined vest, and overall size provided definitive field
marks. Unfortunately it did not call.
Leesylvania was active, mostly bluebirds, robins, swallows, and blackbirds,
but otherwise, migrants, other than Blue-gray Gnatcatchers, were limited in
numbers. Among the four birders present (Laura Catterton, George Wheaton,
Paul Kane and myself) there was a sprinkling of warbler sightings--Parula,
Yellow-throated, Redstart, Black-and-White, Blackburian, and Prairie. A
Summer Tanager, a Yellow-billed Cuckoo, Blue Grosbeaks, and a few Bank
Swallows among the swallow flocks were some of the other passerine
highlights.
