Yesterday (5/29/05) I was headed up the Blue Ridge Parkway when I
noticed a bird atop a large dead tree near a stream crossing at
milepost 213.1 (just south of the Blue Ridge Music Center) near the
Carroll/Grayson Co. border. I stopped to get a better look and sure
enough it turned out to be an Olive-sided Flycatcher! This bird
thoughtfully showed its white tufts on the sides of the rump, in
addition to the vest. After a few sallies from the top of the tree,
the bird disappeared. No doubt a late migrant. This was a first for
Virginia for me. Later on I saw another personal Virginia first, as a
Black Bear wandered through my yard near Fancy Gap!
