[va-bird] Occoquan banding 4/25,28,29

Here are the latest banding totals for Occoquan. There may have been some
other interesting natural history type things
going on today, but the birds came so fast and furious that we did not have
time to pay any attention.

On Wednesday Spring Sprung, and the migration had come. Honeybees swarmed,
essentially blocking access to nets 3 / 4 for a while; but were gone by
Saturday. Saturday started slow and steady, but with ANOTHER OCCO lifer, a
Solitary Sandpiper in net 4.  Then at 9:30, 25 birds were netted;
subsequently none were caught on the 10:00 run. On Sunday all bird broke
loose: record day of 121 birds banded, surpassing the previous best of 76 on
May 1, 2002; and doubling what we normally consider a busy day of 50 to 60
new birds. Half Yellow-rumps, 20% WTSPs, 13% Gray Cats, and 10 other
species. Our visitors included birders, friends, children and lots of
Joanna?s grandchildren. We were a hive of activity. A return visitor, 8
year-old Sarah, specifically asked to visit the station again this year for
her birthday. Candles are part of our banding supplies, and Paul always has
his baked goods, this time a chocolate cake.
