I visited Occoquan NWR in Woodbridge this morning and saw some nice
birds. I had not been there in a while, and the refuge seems to be
making an effort to enhance meadow habitat. Large areas have been
mowed, and the area where the buildings used to be look like it is being
groomed for meadow and a pond has been added. I saw about half a dozen
tree sparrows, two meadowlarks, and a sizable flock of savannah sparrows
not far from the parking lot. Also seen were a hooded merganser,
American merganser, two wood ducks, yellow-bellied sapsucker, creeper,
and swamp sparrow, as well as the usual suspects.
