I had a very nice walk around parts of Occoquan NWR this morning. Little wind
and cool temps. Lots of sparrows, with 8 species seen (song, swamp, savannah,
field, tree, fox, white-throated, dark-eyed junco, and eastern towhee). One
american pipit flew over while I was scanning the Occoquan River. In the
Occoquan and Belmont Bay were all three merganser species, 1 female goldeneye,
bufflehead, gadwall, mallard, black duck, and a massive raft of lesser scaup.
Raptors were represented by bald eagle, harrier (with a vole), red-tailed,
red-shoulder, and sharp-shinned. Other goodies were 5 meadowlarks, several
winter wrens, creeper, and golden-crowned kinglet. In all I found 56 species.
