Nearly perfect weather for bird watching this morning. Ok, a little warmer
and a bit more sunshine would have been nice, but I am not complaining. We
spend several hours at Occoquan Bay and drove to the Great Marsh Trail for a
quick visit.
Occoquan Bay was very active this morning, highlights included Common
Merganser (6 males flying over), Pied-billed Grebe, my First Great Egret of
the year, Bonaparte's Gulls, Caspian and Forsters Terns, a handful Blue-Gray
Gnatcatchers, Swamp Sparrows, 2 Savannah Sparrows, Fox Sparrow near the
parking lot and lots of field Sparrows. I finally got the see the resident
Wild Turkey's and a ton of Ospreys. After about 12 I stopped counting,
afraid of double counts.
At the bird banding station, a Golden-crowned and Ruby-crowned Kinglet were
caught while we visited and banded. It is always soo cool to see these tiny
bird close-up. My thanks to the staff manning the banding station today. It
was well worth the visit.
The Great Marsh Trail at Mason Neck NWR was quiet. The 6 Greater and one
Lesser Yellowlegs were noisy as if to claim the area was owned by them. A
few Am Black Ducks lingered and a few Forsters Terns were exploring the mud
flats.
Total tally for the days was 65 species and not a single warbler (were are
they???).
