Virginia birders,

An interesting morning at Observatory Hill (Tue, 1
May) in Charlottesville. Bird numbers were not
spectacular, but there was a
fairly continuous trickle of birds & decent diversity
between 06:30 and 08:30 am. The birders included Mike
Iwanik, Teresa Shaner, Betsy Moon, Amy Gilmer, and
myself.

The warblers we recorded (more heard than seen):
BLACK-THROATED GREEN, BLACK-THROATED BLUE, BLACK AND
WHITE, OVENBIRD, BLUE-WINGED, YELLOW-RUMPED, and PINE.

We had a 3 thrush species morning, my first in VA:
HERMIT THRUSH (seen well), SWAINSON'S THRUSH (seen
well and heard singing), plus singing WOOD THRUSH.

At least 2 YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO were calling at length
and loudly, and one was seen well, munching a
caterpillar. We heard a BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO call
twice, though we did not see it. Recorded BLUE-HEADED
(esp fine views), RED-EYED, & YELLOW-THROATED VIREOS.
Also a GREAT CRESTED FLYCATCHER, 2 gorgeous male
SCARLET TANAGERS, well seen and (for e brief interval)
singing in close proximity. GRAY CATBIRD. BROWN
THRASHER. RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET numbers continue
strong, joined this a.m. by a lone GOLDEN-CROWNED
KINGLET. 2 EASTERN KINGBIRDS wandered by for a brief
visit to the summit. Also BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHER. And
the Usual Suspects.

Mike Iwanik reports a GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLER at O Hill
Monday morning, 30 April. I shoulda been there! Work
does get in the way of spring! I console myself with
the fact that it's likely to get better ... :-)
