I was just outside for 3/4 hour with my high
school ornithology class at the edge of the Flint
Hill campus and Oak Marr Park in Oakton (Fairfax
Co). In the drainage pond, which is now mostly
mud, were 2 killdeer, 2 solitary sandpiper (nice
aggressive sign language between them), and 1
beautiful spotted sandpiper. 3 male mallards and
one hybrid male mallard/black(?) were also there
with a pair of Canada Geese. We followed the
drainage creek into Oak Marr park for about 50
yards and were thrilled to see 1 worm-eating
warbler, 1 black-and-white warbler, 1 blue-headed
vireo, about a dozen myrtle warblers (some
singing and in fabulous plumage) and 2 blue-gray
gnatcatchers. Also 4 woodpecker species including
one really nice female pileated pecking away at a
log on the ground. We heard a nashville warbler.
The palm warblers that had been here for a couple
weeks have moved on. This was much better than
sitting in the classroom.8-)
