John Belz, Diane Marton and myself stopped off at Great Falls park on the
way back from the
NVBC's walk at Riverside Parkway wetlands (45+ species but nothing unusual).
Great Falls was
very quiet and we were leaving just before noon when Diane spotted a bird
perched on the top
of a dead snag.  It resolved itself into an OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER.  The
bird was seen from
the south parking lot (sharp right just after the toll booth).  The tree is
on the west end
of the parking lot (toll booth end - keep your back to the river) and has
many small dead
branches on top.  The other outstanding bird was a BARRED OWL seen from the
dyke that
intersects with the Carriage Road.  He seemed to be actively hunting and
perched himself in a
small tree that was below eye level for us as we stood on the dyke.  Also
seen were YB CUCKOO
and LA. WATERTHRUSH.
