All,
65 species in something like four hours of birding spread over Saturday and
Sunday, 4/26 and 27 in lower Northumberland County, near Rt. 200 north of
Kilmarnock. Highlights include: Red throated loon, Caspian terns and surf
scoters off the beach and seaside sparrows (ten or more) and brown headed
nuthatch at Hughlett Point NAP; red-headed woodpecker, summer tanager, palm
warbler and a late ruby-crowned kinglet in woods off Rt. 606; least
sandpipers, greater and lesser yellowlegs and green wing teal in a wet field
next to Shiloh School and my first blue grosbeak and ruby-throated
hummingbird of the season in the yard at home. White-eyed vireos and common
yellowthroats everywhere, and an eastern box turtle, five-lined skink and
black racer snake were the first terrestrial reptiles of the season for me.
This morning in Cape Charles, two tundra swans passed overhead around 7 AM.
