An early lunch stroll along the beachfront and harbor at Cape Charles
produced our first Northern Rough-winged Swallows of the season, clearly local
nesters that use the old drain pipes set into the ferry wharves (ferries to
Little
Creek and to Old Point Comfort ran here 1883-1953). (The nesting area, all
behind a large chain-link fence, has recently been purchased by a foreign
developer, who probably plans to sell it to another developer. It's hope that
some
sort of agreement can be reached that will preserve the swallows' nesting
areas or perhaps substitute something similar in whatever structure is built on
the water here.) There are a few other nesting areas for the species in the
county, but this is the largest group I know of on the Virginia Shore.
Purple Martins have yet to arrive but should be 'in' in a few more days -
beautiful spring weather again today.
