Nov 29,30/02 Northern Neck and Middle Peninsula
I didn't note all birds and I didn't bird the
land-birds very thoroughly but here are the
things I did note.
1. Best birds: 9 LAPLAND LONGSPUR in flock of
150-175 horned larks and 40 American Pipits in
freshly-plowed field just upriver from Leedstown
(Westmoreland County on the 29th)(my first
Longspurs in VA)
Also at this field were 1 harrier, 3 killdeer, 25
house sparrows, and in the river nearby were 400
canada geese, 5 ruddy duck.
2. Troy Creek Farm (private), Leedstown, 29th
10 Mallard
15 gadwall
15 wood duck
10 american wigeon
2 red-headed wdpkr
2 yb sapsucker
1 MERLIN, nice adult
1 white-crowned sparrow
8 meadowlark
also: harrier, red-tail, red-shouldered,
kestrel(2), killdeer (2), bald eagle (2), junco
(15), kingfisher (2), great-blue (2)
3. Harts Landing on Rappahannock (Westmoreland
Co)
4 ruddy duck, 1 bald eagle, 1 forster's tern
4. Singerly Pond (Richmond Co, 29th)
90 hooded merganser, 12 ruddy duck, 53 canada
geese, 2 killdeer, 4 bufflehead, 1 mallard, 1
kestrel
5. Fones Cliffs (Carter's Wharf, Richmond Co
29th)
5 BONAPARTE'S GULLS, 5 ruddy duck, 2 red-breasted
mergansers, 1 bald eagle
6. Jones Creek (Rappahannock R, Richmond Co,
29th)
10 ruddy duck, 4 bald eagle, 1 red-tail, 1
red-breasted merganser, 350 canada geese, 150
duck sp(out of scope range)
7. Currioman Landing (Potomac R, Westmoreland Co,
29th)
125 ruddy duck, 20 bufflehead, 2 great blue, 1
cooper's hawk
8. Horner's (rte 624) dead end at Potomac (29th)
45 bufflehead, 1 kestrel, 1 dc cormorant
9. George Washington's Birthplace (Potomac, 29th)
87 forster's terns, 700 canada geese, 21 tundra
swan, 40 mallard, 1600 ring-billed gull, 5
laughing gull, 2 great blue, 52 gadwall, 1000
scaup sp, 40 bufflehead, 4 common loon
10. St Margaret's School, Tappahannock (30th)
10 ruddy duck, 4 dc cormorant, 1 great black
backed gull
11. Essex Mill Pond S of Tappahannock on 609
10 hooded mergansers, 4 mallard
12. Ware's Wharf (Middlesex Co) at Rapp. R, 30th
530 ruddy duck, 1 greater scaup, 4 dc cormorant,
1 herring gull, 1 great-black backed gull
13. Canoe House Road beach, Jamaica (Rap. R.
30th)
8000 RUDDY DUCK (wow!), 11 common loon, 30 horned
grebe, 40 bufflehead, 15 common goldeneye, 2 bald
eagle, 1 GRAY CATBIRD, 60 robin, 15 myrtle
warbler, 20 cedar waxwing
14. Locust Hill landing (S of Christchurch)
65 bufflehead, 1 common looon, 2 laughing gull,
25 great black-backed gull, 10 herring gull, 1
great blue
15. Old Town Farm viewed from road near Pamunkey
(King William Co, 30th)
3000 Canada Goose, 22 gadwall, 4 american wigeon
16. The Pocket (Pamunkey reservation, King
William, 30th)
500 Canada Geese, 2 forster's terns, 140 DUNLIN
(my first here), 5 greater yellowlegs, 10 "peep"
too far away, 4 laughing gull, 1 herring gull, 15
ring-billed gull, 6 CANVASBACK, 30 mallard, 60
greater scaup, 20 bufflehead, 8 ruddy duck, 16
coot, 11 pied billed grebe, 2 bald eagle, 1
red-tailed hawk, 5 great blue
17. Private reserve near The Pocket (King WIlliam
Co on the 30th)(different birds from Pocket)
950 Canada Geese, 8 wood duck, 800 Mallard, 36
black duck, 96 pintail, 290 ring-necked duck, 14
gadwall, 1 ruddy duck, 6 lesser yellowlegs(and
the 5 greater from other side of Pocket), 4
killdeer, no snipe, 6 forter's terns, 3 bald
eagle, 30 flicker, 7 red-headed woodpecker, 3
sapsucker, 2 great blue heron, 1 red-tail, 1
red-shouldered, 2 kestrel
18. Other birds spotted in these two days not at
the above locations:
6 other kestrels, 1 sharp-shinned hawk, 5
red-tailed, 3 red-shouldered, 2 harrier, 40
meadowlark, about 60 bluebird, vultures going to
roost in Montross, 10s of thousands of blackbirds
(mixed spp flock) in Hague
