Evening,
On November 15 and 16 I made a trip to the Northern Neck. Westmoreland State
Park and Caledon Natural Area are still closed due to hurricane damage.
At the Wayside Park on US 301, four Bald Eagles spent the morning fishing in
the shallow waters near the bridge.
At Land's End WMA, I met Milton cutting fallen trees. The Area is closed due
to hurricane damage. However, Milton took me on a tour of the fields and a
look at an active eagle's nest. Thousand of migrating Canada Geese and two
Snow Geese were on the mud flats of the Rappahannock River. Great Blue Herons
and four Bald Eagles were flying over the flats as well.
At George Washington Birthplace National Monument, Gadwalls and Mallards were
abundant in the fresh water pond next to the Potomac River.
At Vir Mar Beach, on the confluence of the Potomac and Chesapeake Bay,
Longtails and Black Scoters were diving in the rainy mist. I was surprised to
see so many Longtails that far in from the coast.
I spent two nights in the Days Inn at Colonial Beach. I recommend it as place
to stay while birding the area. Here, Brown Pelicans and Cormorants occupied
most of the pilings. Hurricane damage is evident here as well. There is a
nice restaurant, Still Waters Grill in town.
Is anyone else going to Chincoteague for Thanksgiving? Hope to see some of you
there.
Regards,
Jim Fitzgerald
