Northerly winds produced a great morning flight of Red-tailed Hawks and
Turkey Vultures here, as well as a steady stream of Bald Eagles (an afternoon
kettle with 10 eagles was remarkable near Mockhorn Island WMA). Searching
through Tree Swallows (perhaps 100-120 for the day, if that many) yielded no
Cave Swallows today, though Brian Taber had a non-Tree Swallow at Kiptopeke
this morning. Strangely, despite the north winds and cool weather, the
swallows were flying much higher than they had been on yesterday's south
winds! Very unexpected. The storm coming tonight (already visible in the
distance) will certainly make things interesting and move us into winter! I
would expect that field birds (including Killdeer and woodcock) and
blackbirds would vacate PA and NY if snows are sufficient to the north.
From Cape May (where a few Cave Swallows were still seen today), Paul Lehman
writes: "Five American White Pelicans just flew straight over Cape May at
2:10 p.m. heading to Cape Henlopen and points south. Look up where you are
tomorrow."
