I have often wondered if migrating hawks were visible from Great North Mountain
in western Frederick County. Today I found out it's a great place to see birds
on an east wind. From the powerline cut at the south end of the road along the
top of the mountain, I had great close looks at many passing raptors. Think:
Wagonner's Gap looks from a lawn chair. I'm definitely going to have to brush
up on identifying birds from above.
Great North Mountain is west of Winchester and south of Route 50. The top of
the mountain may be reached through the Shawneeland subdivision.
From 12:30 til 5, I saw the following birds.
Osprey --- 4
Cooper's Hawk --- 3
Sharp-shinned Hawk --- 2
Kestrel ---1
Red-shouldered Hawk --- 1
Red-tailed Hawk --- 3
Broad-winged Hawk --- 269
Bald Eagle --- 4
