Tom and I did a little birding at the Norfolk Botanical Gardens today. We
arrived before the park opened and walked on the path by the lake before the
entrance. Within close sight were two Red-throated Loons. They were very
pretty but not in breeding plumage.
Inside the park hundreds of Cedar Waxwings greeted us. They were amazing. I
have never seen that many at one time. They were eating berries naturally (I
received some droppings up close and personal on my FACE....thank goodness my
mouth wasn't open!) and they were also eating gnats that were VERY plentiful.
It was fascinating to watch them "flycatch" and was a new experience for me.
In the picnic area we watched some Spotted Sandpipers on the shore, Great
Crested Flycatchers and some very BOLD Crows and Mallards begging for food.
Pine Warblers song filled the park and a lone White Eyed Vireo. Not much
warbler activity in the park....but I could have missed some as I was a tad
pre-occupied with our wonderful 6 week old Grandson. :-)
