In addition to the now regular 3 YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT HERONS, I saw my first
of the year NIGHTHAWKS (7) foraging around the new beaver pond for a few
minutes, then flying off to the northeast. They were gone by 6 a.m. Other
highlights included numerous CANADA WARBLERS (7) outnumbering the REDSTARTS
and BLACKPOLLS. Best other bird was a WILSON'S WARBLER. Also saw my first
female BLUE GROSBEAK of the year.
I guess it would have been to much to ask for a nightingale . . . .
Haven't been to White Oaks since Friday, so don't know what's there this
weekend. (This morning I went on a pilgrimage out of Virginia (gasp!) to
Hughes Hollow. At about 5:15 driving up, two nighthawks swooped in our
headlights at close range for 5-10 seconds; exciting, and we didn't hit
them. No night-herons, but we had both bitterns, moorhen, Wilson's,
Blackburnian, and 4 cerulean warblers. But I can't talk about it, 'cause it
was in Maryland.)
Looking forward to a good night's sleep when migration is over . . . .
