Greg Beck and I birded areas in and around Nokesville in Prince William this
past Saturday, 2/24/2007. It was a nice day of birding with temperatures
cold but not horribly so.
We found a Tundra Swan in a field near ~1000 or so Canada Geese. This is the
same place that the Ross's Goose was seen earlier this month. Off of
Parkgate Dr. We also found an odd Canada Goose Hybrid in a smaller flock of
Canada Geese along Vint Hill Dr (see picture here:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/nothoo/403510845/ ;). The Raptor's made a good
showing with equal numbers of Red-shouldered and Red-tailed Hawks, a lone
Northern Harrier, only a single American Kestrel, and somewhat surprisingly
a good number more Black than Turkey Vultures. We ran into a good group of
Savannah Sparrows along Fleetwood Dr as well as a single Eastern Meadowlark.
On the way back home we saw a raft of ducks in a small lake behind a small
church on Valley View Dr. The lake harbored at least 12 Gadwall, the males
looking very sharp, 9 American Black Ducks, at least three dozen Ring-necked
Ducks, and a few Mallards mixed in as well. Good views of the lake were
limited by trees.
