Well folks, once again it's time for the Northern VA Bird Club to sponsor a
Big Sit! circle:
When - Sunday, Oct. 10, 2004
Where - to 'o the tower at Huntley Meadows Park, Alexandria
Time - we will count from before sunup (5:30am or so) to a bit after sundown
(6:30 of 7pm).
And - no - you don't have to be there for all those hours. Come for a few
hours or come for five minutes to say hi...this is one of the easier events to
participate in - once one gets out to the tower, one need only exercise the
posterior and sit in the circle for as long as one desires. Last year we
tallied
62 species and finished in the top 20 (out of 160) - highlights were Am.
Bittern, Snipe and lots of hawks in migration riding a light wind from the
north.
( For those of you heading out to the Eastern Shore Birding Festival, stop by
the platform in Kiptopeke and sit in the circle there for a while... VA
circles cumulatively totaled 94 species last year.)
I am looking for volunteers to commit to two hour "shifts" - starting at 6:30
- 8:30 am, 8:30 - 10:30 am, 10:30a - 12:30p, 12:30 - 2:30p: 2:30 - 4:30p and
4:30 - 6:30p. Please give me a call at 703 - 768 - 1641 or email me off
list...Jay Keller and I will be walking in at 5:30 (yes, it's still dark) to
listen
for owls and early risers...feel free to join us.
