VA Birders,
45 Nighthawks wheeled and turned as they fed over the yard and neighboring
fields here on Compton Mt. late yesterday afternoon. They hung around for a
couple of hours before moving on.
40 species (including the nighthawks) showed up in and around the yard
yesterday. I had the first AMERICAN REDSTART in a few weeks. Other warblers
were BLACK-AND-WHITE 1, BLACKBURNIANS 3, BLACK-THROATED GREEN 2, BLUE-WINGED
1, CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLER 3 (all females), HOODED WARBLER 1, TENNESSEE
WARBLERS 2, WORM-EATING WARBLER 1, YELLOW-THROATED WARBLERS 2.
Other interesting species were BALTIMORE ORIOLE 1, BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHER 1,
BLUE-HEADED VIREO 1, RED-EYED VIREO 2, YELLOW-THROATED VIREO 1, CEDAR WAXWING
2, EASTERN WOOD PEWEE 1, INDIGO BUNTING 1, PILEATED WOODPECKER 1, SCARLET
TANAGER 4 (in non-breeding plumage) and YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO 1.
