[va-bird] Neotropic Cormorant, White-winged Scoter in VA

Hello VA-Birders,

I just returned from Violette's Lock near Seneca, Maryland and witnessed the
NEOTROPIC CORMORANT on the Potomac River. I arrived before 7:30 and was
scoping the area when I noticed two dark birds lift out of and circle (twice)
the golf course across the river on the Virginia side. The birds flew from
there in front of me to a choppy area not far from my vantage point in the
river and started to feed. When they flew across it was plain to see that they
were both cormorants, one DOUBLE-CRESTED and one NEOTROPIC. The Neotrop is
obviously smaller and elongate in appearance. When the birds landed in the
water together tails first, it was clear to see that the Neotrop's is
proportionately longer than the DC's. Several of us later got great scope
views of the bird pirched among DC's, though closer to the VA side.

Additionally, the WHITE-WINGED SCOTER reported over the past few days is still
present, and a few of us watched it as it put a wing over Loudoun County, VA as
it landed close to that shore. It would be a great view from the golf course.

The last I heard, the Neotrop flew downriver about a mile and had been seen
there by at least one observer.

Take Care,

Jay Keller,
Arlington
