Not the way some people shoot. If a steel shot hits it's mark, it is just as
lethal as lead. If you wing shoot a bird with lead, it can live for years as
a cripple. The Common Eiders that nest in Buzzards Bay in Massachusetts
probably got colonized by cripples. They were fine and healthy birds but
couldn't fly. That probably goes for the ones that breed on Boston Harbor's
outer islands. I spent a day trying to find one cripple hen Mallard in the
East Sandwich marsh on Cape Cod that I shot with lead. Luckily, I found it
but as you know, most rot. I have also killed healthy flying ducks and found
someone else's shot in the bird.
