Dear birding colleagues,
Many of you may be aware that the National Park Service is in the process of
conducting mult-taxa inventories on all National Park lands nationwide, phasing
in different regions each year. Some of you have been participating in bird
inventories for the National Capital Parks West region over the last year or
two. However, for Mid-Atlantic Region and Coastal and Barrier Region Parks the
Center for Conservation Biology has been coordinating the bird inventory and
data collection effort. We have field staff that have been involved with
conducting survey rounds since January, but now we are inviting other
interested volunteers to help track the magnitude and diversity of migration
through these parks.
The Parks involved in this project include, from west to east, Booker T.
Washington NHS, Appomattox Court House NHP, Petersburg NB,
Fredericksburg/Spotsylvania NMP, Richmond NB, Thomas Stone NHS (Maryland),
George Washington's Birthplace NM, and Colonial NHP. Each of these parks has
been divided into several survey zones, for segregating observations. And most
of these parks have several land units, often miles apart. If you have an
interest in birdwatching at any of these parks or their satellite units please
let us know. You would be under no obligation to adhere to any particular
schedule or agree to any time committments. Nor would you have to conform to
the rigors of standardized point counts. We would just be interested in what
you saw whenever you were there.
I might add that several of these parks have some substantial hiking trails
that traverse a broad array of habitats. We will provide aerial imagery and
maps to any interested birders.
Thanks in advance, and please direct all responses to me personally, rather
than the list-serv.
