With shorebird migration at or near peak, birders flocked to
the banks of Hunting Creek this morning, and among them were
at least 13 from the Northern Virginia Bird Club. The birds
didn't disappoint. Fifteen species of shorebirds were
tallied from about 8:30 until 11:00 AM, viewed only from
the west side of the stone bridge. Two Willets and one
Sanderling were new to this season's list, as far as I am
aware, and most of the other species that have been present
for the past few weeks were there as well. Peeps seemed
conspicuously fewer in number. A few non-shorebirds were
picked up by alert birders to round out our list of 45
species.
