[va-bird] NVBC Sky Meadows St. Pk, 2/21/04

Six people braved strong winds & falling temperatures today for the Northern
Virginia Bird Club trip to Sky Meadows State Park, led by Ian Topolsky &
myself. Sky Meadows lived up to its reputation as the most reliable place in
Northern Virginia for Red-headed Woodpeckers. We saw at least 10 of them in
the woods along the service road into the group campgound. Alexander Wilson
left his name on a storm petrel, a snipe, a phalarope, and a warbler, but from
his very first day in North America the Red-headed Woodpecker was his favorite
bird & on a day like today, with close-up views of the birds in the sunlight,
it was easy to see why he felt that way.
A flock of about 15 tree sparrows, at the same location as reported by Scott
Baron, was also a welcome sight on a day when most of the smaller birds were
hunkered down out of the wind.
