Highlights of our Northern Virginia Bird Club's field trip to the
Lucketts area, in northern Loudoun Co., were: at least 100 Purple Martins at
what we have dubbed "Martin City"--the colony behind the house on Rt. 662
across from the Presbyterian Church--and at least 60 Tree Swallows, most of
them there as well; a Yellow-breasted Chat, which sat up on the telephone
wire and sang and displayed for us on Rt. 658; 4 Grasshopper Sparrows, also
on Rt. 658; and a Blue Grosbeak at the end of Rt. 656 (the "Pig Farm" road).
The 5 club members who took part in the trip went around Lucketts in 2 cars,
and we communicated with each other with our 2-way radios. We found a total
of 59 species on the trip.
